Leaving for College

Leaving for College: Daddy’s gift

Leaving for college sees a father helping his daughter get ready for college. The dialogue is tender, but obviously there’s more than what’s being said. The reality is they’re both controlled by their most basic and primitive instincts. Once they let go of societal demands they couldn’t stop themselves.

The camera lingers just long enough

The tone feels very intimate. When the father tells her she has a beautiful smile, the viewer’s anticipation grows, and when she replies, “If the boys don’t think I’m cute, at least you do,” the tension snaps and a young woman’s cravings awaken.

This is the moment the film earns its incest porno credentials. The scene turns sharply into an exaggerated, make-out session, complete with slobbering French kisses and gasped “I love yous.” The sound mix, sticky, breathy, and relentless, pushes the form of exploitation cinema to its limits. The camera is uncomfortably close, feels like it’s mocking the voyeuristic tendencies of 1970s shockers. Then, just when the audience wonders if they’ve stumbled into a full-on taboo scenario, they’re given the answer they were hoping for.

The descent into darkness

Groans, moans, and declarations of love spill out. The line, “I always thought it would be big”, is a coy seduction. The anticipated desire longed for by the audience. But this is where Leaving for College swerves from grime to gold.

We find that the lovers are only human after all. The passionate gropes and devouring kisses pull the viewer in by his own lust. But he remains guilt free, as the young woman reveals she has longed for this moment. Panting she declares, “Daddy, I want it in me”.

Grown up but never apart

Leaving for college isn’t just a removal of clothing, it’s the stripping of society’s face masks. One of a young college-bound girl, the other of a middle-aged man. The father and daughter to the world. But as individuals, they’re both creatures of night who long for the forbidden. In the intimacy of home, they unleash the truth of what they are.

Executed here with self-awareness, Leaving for College mocks its sleazy counterparts. And those who embrace their own lusts enjoy the descent into darkness. It’s the filmmakers’ wink to them: “You wanted to see this, didn’t you?”
